Dutch Hydrangea: Buying and Handling

Nothing fills a design like hydrangea, and nothing collapses faster when it is thirsty.

Blue hydrangeas growing at a Dutch grower

Colours and sizes

Dutch hydrangea is graded by head size and sold in blue, pink, white, green, and the antique tones that appear as the season progresses. Blue and pink come from the same plants grown in different soil conditions, which is why tones vary between growers — worth knowing when you need an exact match across an installation.

  • Classic blue and deep blue for cool palettes
  • Soft pink through magenta for romantic work
  • White and cream for bridal and luxury interiors
  • Antique green and burgundy tones later in the season

Hydration is everything

Hydrangea drinks through the head as well as the stem. On arrival, cut the woody stem at a sharp angle, remove excess leaves and give the flowers a deep drink in cool water. A wilted head can often be revived by submerging the whole head in water for 20–30 minutes.

In a Riyadh climate

Hydrangea suffers in dry AC air. Keep it in deep water at all times, mist lightly, and in installations use hydrating foam or water tubes rather than dry mechanics. Warn clients not to place it directly under an air-conditioning vent.

Web-Flora supplies florists, wedding and event professionals, hotels and premium retailers in Saudi Arabia with fresh Dutch flowers. Minimum order is 2 boxes (around €600), shipments leave the Netherlands weekly, and Ahmed Frindi is your direct personal contact.
