Dutch Roses: A Buyer's Guide for Florists

The rose is the backbone of almost every flower business. Buying it well is mostly about knowing what to specify.

Specify variety, length and grade

Never order "red roses". Order a named variety at a stated length and grade. Red Naomi is the classic large-headed Dutch red; Avalanche is the reference white; Athena, Playa Blanca, Quicksand, Sweet Avalanche and Menta cover the neutral and blush range that dominates wedding work.

Stem lengths generally run from 40 to 80 cm. Longer stems mean bigger heads and a higher price. For bouquets 50–60 cm is the practical standard; for tall event work 70–80 cm.

  • Red Naomi — deep red, very large head, strong scent
  • Avalanche — pure white, reliable, excellent volume
  • Quicksand / Sweet Avalanche — beige and soft blush tones
  • Garden and spray roses — texture and softness for bridal work

Dutch greenhouse roses versus imported roses

Dutch greenhouse production is grown under controlled conditions with heavy quality selection: uniform heads, straight stems and predictable opening. African and South American roses traded through the Dutch market offer other strengths, especially in head size for the price. Both pass through the same Dutch trade chain, and both can be sourced for you.

Handling roses on arrival

Cut at an angle, remove lower leaves and any damaged guard petals, and hydrate in cool clean water with flower food for several hours before selling or arranging. Bent necks are almost always a hydration problem, not a quality problem.
