Dutch Tulips: Season, Types and Handling
The flower the Netherlands is known for — and one of the best value-for-impact products a florist can buy.

The season
Dutch tulips are forced in greenhouses and available from roughly November through April, peaking in the first months of the year. Outside that window availability drops sharply, so tulips are a winter-and-spring product in your planning.
Types worth specifying
Single tulips are the classic; double tulips read almost like peonies and are a smart peony substitute out of season; parrot tulips bring ruffled, painterly edges; French tulips are extra long-stemmed and elegant, and priced accordingly.
- Single — clean, classic, best value
- Double — peony-like volume, excellent for bridal
- Parrot — dramatic ruffled petals and colour breaks
- French — very long stems, luxury statement flower
Tulips keep growing after you cut them
Tulips can add several centimetres in the vase and bend towards light. Wrap them in paper for the first hours of hydration to keep the stems straight, use shallow water — they rot in deep water — and expect movement in the arrangement, which is part of their charm.
